Nocturnal Insect Inspires Unique Color Palette

posted July 10th, 2009 in Graphic Design by jillharding

A chiefly nocturnal insect relating to the butterfly family recently began to hang out outside near Boundless Design’s graphic design studio. The moth hangs out during the day time with it’s wings folded flat displaying the unique coloration that exist on the thin angelic like soft wings. This moth stood out to me for several reasons — the extremely unique colors it possesses as most moths’ colors are typically drab, the peacefulness the moth carried and the elegance of a fragile creature resting in it’s nature surroundings.

As a graphic designer I have learned a bit by looking at and watching this unique moth. I have learned that when I get designer block all I need to do is place myself in a natural surrounding and observe what is around me. Also I have acquired a better appreciate for an insect in which before I really never gave much thought to at all.

Color palettes are challenging for many to create which causes many to be afraid of color. When color is utlized and palettes are created properly then a logo, a brand, an office, a home, etc. – can really begin to stand out from the rest making it unique. So begin taking the work out of creating color palettes and simply surround yourself with natural elements and objects and be observant as the colors are there you just now have to open your eyes to see them.
